Economy Borough Councilman Dr. Gregory Trecha has announced he is resigning from office. His resignation follows an investigative report published yesterday by the Beaver Countian, detailing controversial statements made by the official on various social media sites.
Councilman Trecha’s Facebook and Twitter pages were deleted earlier today, along with the remarks that many residents of Economy Borough had dubbed racist.
The Republican Committee of Beaver County issued a statement distancing themselves from Trecha, saying they played no role in his campaign, had not endorse his candidacy, and did not agree with his assertions. Economy Mayor David Poling issued a statement soon after, denouncing Trecha and calling for his resignation.
Just hours after those statements, Trecha announced that he was resigning.
“Council President Larry Googins said during tonight’s public meeting that he received a message from Dr. Trecha, notifying us he is resigning from office,” Mayor David Poling told the Beaver Countian. “We expect to receive his official letter of resignation within the next day.”
Mayor Poling said he was pleased with Trecha’s decision, and believes it is in the best interest of the community. “I don’t think he really had any other choice, with the public comments that he made, he had no alternative but to withdraw from office.”
Gregory Trecha has not returned a message from the Beaver Countian seeking comment.
