Beaver Borough Council voted down a proposal Tuesday night that would have started the process of abolishing the borough’s three wards and cutting the size of its council.
The 8-1 vote left Councilman Jarrod Thomas, who put the motion on the agenda, as the lone member in favor.
The motion would have directed Beaver Borough Solicitor Garen Fedeles, who also serves as Beaver County solicitor, to draft an ordinance eliminating the wards ahead of the 2027 election cycle. State law requires a borough’s council to drop to seven members if its ward system is abolished, Fedeles previously told council. Beaver currently elects nine members, three from each ward.
The meeting stayed congenial throughout, with council and residents appearing to listen to one another intently and respectfully.
Among those speaking in favor was former Beaver County Prothonotary Nancy Werme, a Beaver resident.
